It is important that as a website owner you keep tabs on what Google is doing with your website.  It is quite amazing how much free stuff they do give us to use and especially with Google Analytics (GA) there is a lot of data to be gathered.  I do here a lot of people on the business forums talk about GA as rightly people are keen to know about traffic but few people talk about the Google webmasters tool (WMT) https://www.google.com/webmasters

It has two quite important aspects that you must use to keep your website squeeky clean.  Fix any broken links that will inevitably happen.  You can either specify that google should delete them from its index again using WMT or you can do a 301 redirect in your .htaccess file to point them to new content.  When you fix these links it is very interesting to see that after a fairly quiet time for Googlebot visits to your site you will see a burst of activity. 

By revisiting the site regularly it is considered that Google will refresh its index with your possibly updated pages and also discover new ones via links on existing pages.
